Scoil Mhuire, Carrick-on-Suir
“Scoil Mhuire is a Christian caring community which encourages the integrated development of every individual concerned”.
Every member of this community – teachers, students, staff, parents –feel a sense of commitment and belonging.
Our principal objective is to provide for our students a broad and balanced education in all its aspects – intellectual, emotional, physical, moral and cultural. This objective is achieved within a controlled but relaxed and happy environment.
The Mercy Sisters arrived in Carrick on Suir in 1874 to provide secondary education for girls in the town whose parents could not send them to boarding school. The school operated as an ‘A’ school solely through the medium of Irish until 1967 and from 1974 all subjects were taught through English.
The current Scoil Mhuire dates back to when the Mercy and the Presentation Secondary Schools found themselves with inadequate accommodation in the late 1960s. Agreement was reached with the Department of Education to build two schools on a common site sharing specialist rooms.
A number of classes moved to the incomplete new building in 1973 and at that time both congregations went into negotiation with Department officials to amalgamate the schools in the town. Agreement was reached that the Mercy Sisters would assume responsibility for secondary education with the Presentation Sisters managing the primary sector.
In 1974 all classes transferred to the new building as Scoil Mhuire in the centenary year of the arrival of Mercy Sisters to Carrick on Suir. The first Parents’ Council was set up in 1975 followed by the establishment of the Students’ Representative Council.
The first Board of Management took office in 1990 and the following year the first Lay Principal was appointed though the Mercy Sisters continued to have extensive contact with and involvement in the school.
Another new chapter in the history of the school was opened with the transfer of trusteeship to CEIST. Scoil Mhuire continues to develop with a reputation for high academic standards, sporting success and a welcoming and pastoral approach for all of our students.
Programmes on offer in the school include the Junior Certificate, traditional Leaving Certificate, Leaving Certificate Applied Programme and Leaving Certificate Vocational Programme.
