School History

The Sisters of Mercy came to Newport in 1901.

In 1949 a Secondary Top was established which was the foundation of St. Mary’s Secondary School, located on the banks of the Mulcair River.

A major extension of high quality was completed in 2005 on this idyllic site which made the continued use of the old primary school for extra space unnecessary.

For the first time since 1980 the entire school was on one site.

The school offers a wide variety of extra curricular activities, including hurling, football, camogie, soccer, rugby, swimming, aerobics, etc.

Students participate in the Concern debates.

Music plays an important part in school life and is also available as a Leaving Certificate subject.
