Mount St Michael Secondary School, Rosscarbery

Mission Statement

Mt. St. Michael, Rosscarbery is a Mercy Secondary School inspired by the charism of Catherine McAuley "to fit the students for earth without unfitting them for Heaven" and is entrusted with the mission of imparting Gospel values to youth through Christian education and example.

We envisage the nurturing and growth of the individual:

  • With a view to harmony of the whole person in a pleasant working environment where each student and staff member is valued and individual talents and leadership are developed and enhanced;
  • Where parent and the local involvement is encouraged and true community is facilitated and fostered;
  • Where an atmosphere of Christianity, Spirituality and Humanity prevails.
  • Inspired by these ideals we dedicate ourselves to the continued growth of our school.

School History

The Convent Built in 1894, is situated in the scenic countryside of West Cork, facing the Atlantic ocean.

To meet the needs of the local community the Sisters continually adapted themselves.

Over the years this has meant a rapid expansion of the post primary (and primary) facilities to accommodate the increased number of pupils.

In 1964 the school became co-educational and at the same time the provision of boarding facilities became available in the Convent.

The provision boarding for girls became very popular over the years giving an opportunity for a Mercy Education to many who may not otherwise have the opportunity. Students boarded from all over Ireland and indeed from further afield also. It was an ideal opportunity for students from the nearby coastal islands like Cape Clear. Many students from there have excellent memories and an excellent education from their time in Mt. St. Michael and the boarding facilities.

Then in 2003/2004 the boarding facilities were phased out after so many years. A big part of the uniqueness of Mercy Rosscarbery ended. Students now live with families in the area or have rented accommodation.

Mt. St. Michael strives through its philosophy and ethos to stress the importance of sound Christian principles. The school in the community keeps itself in touch with everyday life happenings for the students in its care. The school offers a range of programmes and subjects that cater for the diverse and many needs of students.

Pastoral care continues to be one of the school's strongest points and this is seen throughout the life of the school and convent.

The aim of the school is to create an atmosphere in which all students will develop their potential with policy documents and practice expressing the purpose and seeking new ways to achieve our aim - preparation for life.
