Mercy College Woodford Excellent Practice Endorsement from DES

An evaluation conducted by the Department of Education and Skills at Mercy College Woodford, Co. Galway has endorsed the very high quality of teaching and learning in the school.

The identity of the mixed secondary school, serving the communities of Woodford, Ballinakill and Abbey, was found to be intrinsically linked to its position within the community.

"Excellent practice" was observed among the teachers, with very good engagement witnessed by students. The report cited many good examples of the use of multimedia and a familiarity with technology.

"Mercy College aims to foster these skills further among its students by creating a hub of excellence in this area. The school hopes to liaise with IT giant, Apple, which is committing €850 million to the region, " said a school spokesperson.

The school's broad curriculum, which this year will include chemistry and agricultural science, was commended. The high quality support received by students with special educational needs was also praised.

This was recognised by the Department in its decision to select Mercy College for the creation of a new ASD unit for children with autism next September, which means extra funding for new facilities, teaching staff and special needs assistants.

In other good news, a summer works scheme has been approved to refurbish the existing art room.
