ACE-Ireland Haiti Initiative

The University of Notre Dame’s Alliance for Catholic Education [ACE] Ireland, in collaboration with ACE Haiti, is seeking two candidates with an expertise in education, an interest in international development and desire to support Catholic Schools in Haiti from July 1st to August 6th, 2016.

The successful candidates will engage in direct service and project co-ordination related to education policy and international development. The two Irish teachers will work closely with two recent American ACE graduates to coordinate workshops with students and deliver professional development modules to the teachers of Basile Moreau School, a flagship pre-K-12 [junior infants to sixth year secondary level in an Irish context] in Port au Prince.

The content of the workshops and Professional Development modules will be teaching English as a foreign language, using technology in the classroom and areas of pedagogy like lesson planning and classroom management. Some basic proficiency in French would be desirable (but not necessary) to ensure maximum effectiveness in interacting with the Haitian communities.

The successful candidates will work under the joint guidance of ACE Associate Director for International Special Projects and the Associate Director for Haitian Catholic Education Initiatives. Before and after the placement, they will liaise with the leaders of ACE-Ireland.

This service opportunity will combine the expertise and energy of Ireland, Haiti and Notre Dame in a mutually beneficial working relationship to enhance the Catholic school system in Haiti. This will also be an opportunity for the two Irish participants to experience the mission of Catholic education in another context. This experience will undoubtedly enrich the personal and professional life of the participating teachers as they arrive back to Ireland.

The successful candidates will be offered:
1. Pre-departure training and a retreat experience
2. All in-country expenses will be covered by ACE
3. Advice, assistance and support from ACE

As this is conceived of as a service opportunity, the candidate will be responsible to pay for their travel to and from Haiti. The candidate will be expected to show proof of appropriate medical and travel insurance ahead of their travels.
