Health and Safety in Our Schools

Health & Safety for School Caretakers

Health and Safety is of paramount importance in our schools. As part of our commitment to ensuring that our schools are safe places for everyone who enters them, the Trustees, in conjunction with Allianz plc, are holding a series of one day training seminars for School Caretakers in October 2010.

In order to minimise any disruption to our schools the training will take place during the October mid-term break from Tuesday, 26th to Friday 29th October 2010. Under current health and safety legislation this training for our School Caretakers is mandatory and training must be undertaken every two years.

The training will cover areas such as manual handling, general health and safety with emphasis on schools, fire safety, preventive maintenance and risk assessment. The training will run from 9:30am until 4:30pm with a one hour break for lunch. Certificates will be issued on completion of the course.

Venues have been booked at four locations for the Caretakers’ Health & Safety Training Day:

  • 26th October 2010 Maynooth
  • 27th October 2010 Athlone
  • 28th October 2010 Charleville
  • 29th October 2010 Kilkenny

There has been very good uptake on the course so far to date. The idea of running a similar course during the February 2011 mid-term break to ensure that all school caretakers are able to attend, is currently under consideration.

HSA – Managing Safety and Health in Post-Primary Schools

The Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Act 2005 requires every employer, including schools, to develop and implement an effective occupational health and safety management system.

The Health and Safety Authority, Department of Education and Skills, the State Claims Agency and The School Development Planning Initiative have prepared 'Guidelines on Managing Safety and Health in Post Primary Schools'. Click here to view.

This comprehensive set of Guidelines is available to all post-primary schools and provides a practical aid to schools in their preparation and operation of risk assessments, safety statements and safety management procedures.

If you wish to download Part 1 or Part 2 of the Guidelines please check the publications section of the HAS website or alternatively if you wish to access the interactive risk assessments please see
