Coláiste Chroí Mhuire, An Spidéal ag obair leis an ‘Alan Kerins Project’

Gach bliain déanann rang na hIdirbliana cúrsa bliana le ‘Foróige’. Is cúrsa ceannasaíochta é seo a bhfuil beim curtha ar fhorbairt scilleanna cinnearachta agus féinchinnearachta ann. Mar thoradh ar an gcúrsa seo tá seans ag na daltaí pointí breise don CAO a shaothrú don todchaí. I mbliana, le cur leis an gcúrsa, tá muid ag tógáil céim eile.

Tá Coláiste Chroí Mhuire, Foróige agus Alan Kerins ag obair le chéile i dtogra a fheicfidh muid ag tabhairt cúnamh don obair atá ar siúl ag an ‘Alan Kerins Project’ i Zambia. Mar chuid den togra seo tá sé i gceist ag roinnt den rang taistil go Zambia um Cháisc, chun cúnamh fisiciúil a thabhairt.

Beidh said ag cuidiú leis an obair tógala, ag obair sna scoileanna agus sa teach dílleachta, agus ag cur dlúthceirnín de cheol dheagóirí Zambia agus dhéagóirí CCm le chéile.

Oibríonn said ar na scilleanna a bhéas ag teastáil uathu chun an togra seo a thabhairt chun críche, ar scoil agus sa chlub atá bunaithe acu a chasann ar a cheile gach trathnóna De hAoine.

Bíonn a gcuid tuismitheoirí agus áisitheoirí Foróige leo ar oicheannta cluib. Le hairgead a bhailiú do Zambia agus le cuidiú leis na costaisí taistil a bhéas acu fein, tá said ag eagrú go leor imeachtaí laistigh agus lasmuigh don scoil. Mar atá le feiceáil thíos, is dream fuinneamhúil iad an rang seo:

  • Beidh said ag canadh carúil ar shráideanna na Gaillimhe roimh Nollaig
  • Beidh oíche rásaí capall acú i óstan i mBothar na Trá, ‘The Galway Bay’ ar an 26ú Samhain
  • Tá sé i gceist acu seó faisiúin a bheith acu chomh maith le
  • rásaí na gcon.
  • Tá seandaoine áitiúla ag eagrú díolachán cacaí le cuidiú leo chomh maith

Tá súil acu go leor airgid a bhailiú ar son mhuintir Zambia, agus go leanfar leis an nasc seo idir CCM agus Zambia ó bhliain go bliain.

An integral part of the Transition Year curriculum in Colaiste Chroí Mhuire, An Spidéal involves a partnership with Foróige whereby students take a year- long course in leadership/good citizenry skills, under the direction of Foróige facilitators.

This course can lead to university accreditation, depending on the engagement of individual students.

In the hope that we can build on this work CCM, Foróige and Alan Kerins are working on a project which we hope will be of practical help to Alan in the valuable work being done by the ‘Alan Kerins Project’ in Zambia.

During the Easter holidays it is hoped that Transition Year students, along with some of their parents and Foróige staff will travel to Zambia to work with Alan.

While in Zambia it is envisaged that students will become involved in building projects, work in the local orphanage and that they will produce a CD combining their own musical efforts along with those of the Zambian teenagers with whom they will interact. They hope to record their visit and to teach their Zambian peers how to use recording equipment. This equipment will then be left with the African youngsters, so that they can continue to document their own progress. This is a huge initiative, and it is our intention that this will merely be the first part of what will become a long association with the ‘Alan Kerins Project’ in Zambia.

Not only must the students finance their own trip but their remit is also to raise awareness and funds for the work being done. Their fundraising efforts have been impressive to date, and they have displayed imagination and a strong energetic work ethic, which of itself has made this project worthwhile for them. Their money making initiatives have included the likes of:

  • Street Collections
  • Pumpkin cutting with local primary school children
  • Collecting old clothes
  • School table quiz
  • A school concert to take place on 9th December, which will include participation by many of the school’s students as well as members of a local choir with links to CCM
  • The selling of a personalised school calendar.
  • The organisation of an art competition the winners of which will illustrate the school Christmas cards which will be sold locally.
  • A night at the races in the ‘Galway Bay Hotel’ on the 26th November.
  • Carol singing on the streets of Galway.
  • A fashion show.
  • A night at Galway Greyhound track.
  • A cake sale organised by the local Active Retired.

It is hoped that this year’s partnership between CCM, Foróige and the ’Alan Kerins Project’ will be just the beginning of a long and happy relationship between the two communities of Spiddal and Kaoma, Zambia.
