Presentation Secondary School Waterford Win All-Ireland U16 Basketball Title!

Presentation Waterford U16 ‘C’ Basketball team made history by reaching their first All-Ireland final on 25th January in the National Basketball Arena.

The team arrived at the arena anticipating a highly competitive game against last years All-Ireland semi finalists Portmarnock Community School. The atmosphere in the arena was electric during the Nation Anthem with both sets of supporters creating a crescendo of noise prior to tip off.

The 1st quarter was an even contest with both teams playing excellent basketball. Presentation guards Valerie O’Brien and Dawn O’Sullivan started confidently controlling the offence whilst Emily Fanning, Jane Crowley and Chloe Morrissey were proving hard to break down with same excellent defence under the boards.

At the end of an intense first quarter Portmarnock led by a single point.

Early in the 2nd quarter the Pres girls turned up the heat and went on a 7:0 run starting with a clever inside score from Chloe, a long 2 pointer from Jane and two swishes from the line from Shannon Keane. Just before half time a massive 3 by Dawn O’Sullivan raised the roof of the arena as the Pres supporters went wild. As half time approached the Pres held a slender 20:14 lead over Portmarnock. This game was obviously far from over.

At the start of the 3rd quarter Portmarnock lifted their game and at one stage narrowed the gap between the two sides to a single basket. However some excellent defence from Eniola Oladiti, Emily Fanning and Jane Crowley coupled with Chloe Morrissey’s highly effective man to man defence on the Portmarnock point guard ensured that the oppositions scoring chances were kept to a minimum for the remainder of the quarter. In the final quarter the Pres girls went from strength to strength with some quality baskets from Valerie, Emily and Dawn. This saw the Pres slowly pull away from a very spirited Portmarnock side who fought for every score until the last seconds of the game.

An emotional final whistle saw the Presentation emerge as winners by a score of 38:24.

Collecting the cup on behalf of the team joint captains Valerie O’Brien and Dawn O’Sullivan acknowledged the spirit and commitment of the players and thanked Coach Jenny Coady for all her expertise in guiding them to the final.

They also paid tribute to Helga Weber-Doyle for her constant support, encouragement and organisation. The icing on the cake was an M.V.P.(most valued player) performance from Dawn O’Sullivan with an impressive 15 points on the day.

The team however have little time to celebrate their win as they are now preparing to represent the Southeast in the All-Ireland semi-final play-offs which are being played in Kiltimagh, Co. Mayo on March 12th.
