TY students transform town car park

A Tuam town centre car park was handed over to the people of Tuam in its new glory at a reception held last Monday evening.










The Bishop Street car park has undergone a major transformation in recent weeks through a project spearheaded by TY students at Presentation College, Currylea, Tuam, Co. Galway.

The area has been rejuvenated with potted trees and plants, a pictorial wall depicting the history of Tuam as well as a specially commissioned seed pod sculpture.










The aim of the inititative, which is part of the girls’ Young Social Innovators (YSI) project, was to turn around an area that had become an eyesore into something interesting.

Three teams from the school attended the YSI showcase in Dublin on May 11th (see below article).

Irish-Austrian Society 2011 Essay Competition

Ciara Finan, a TY student, has recently won the 2011 Essay Competition in conjunction with the Irish-Austrian Society.

As a prize winner, Ciara will spend a fortnight at the Collegium Austriacum in Salzburg this summer.

His Excellency, the Austrian Ambassador, Dr. Walter Hagg will present the prize at a ceremony at his residence on Tuesday next May 17th.

Young Social Innovators 2011 Achievements

At the Young Social Innovators 2011 final which took place in City West hotel, Dublin, on the 11th May, Presentation College, Tuam were winners in 2 categories.

Transition Year students from the college won awards for their projects "Hope Square" which involved rejuvenating a car park in the town centre, and " I need U" which involved students setting up a volunteer centre in the town.

Another project entitled " Your Car, our future" was also selected for the final.
