Fifth year students Oisín McHugh, Brian Rowan, Grace Byrne, Graham Power and Richard Mynhardt travelled across the globe to compete in the international contest, where they were crowned runners-up in the New Teams category.

The team, who were accompanied by their teachers Claire McHugh, Mike Ryan and School Principal Ray Murray, were also placed 11th overall in the world finals.

The sixteen-year-olds came up against stiff competition from 22 other teams from across the world.

After three days of competition, the overall results were announced on Wednesday 21 September and the disappointed Carlow team were gracious in defeat.

“The standard was absolutely unbelievable. It was a lot tougher than we expected,” said team member Oisín. “But it was a fantastic experience and we really had a lot of fun.”
