Presentation College, Athenry students given pride of place at Presidential inauguration

Twenty-Five students with staff members from Presenation College, Athenry were invited to attend the inauguration of the ninth President of Ireland.

The invitation to attend the inauguration came before the election and the subsequent result.

It is therefore an even greater honour for the school now that the new President is Michael D. Higgins from Galway.

The students are chosen from first and second year groups. In all eight schools in the country have been invited to the inauguration, four primary schools and four second level schools. They students and staff members travelled to Dublin on the morning of November 11th.

They met in Kilmainham with the other schools and were transported to Dublin Castle by CIE buses with a Garda escort.

In Dublin Castle the students were treated to light refreshments and then assembled to greet the arrival of the President-elect in the Castle Courtyard.

During the inauguration the students watched the ceremony on close circuit televison. Afterwards the students assembled in the courtyard to meet the new President.

Finally, the students were served lunch and returned home.
