Mercy Foundation Day 180 years

On Monday 12 December 2011 the Sisters of Mercy – and the Mercy “family” throughout the world will celebrate 180 years since the Foundation Day of the Congregation.

It was on this day 180 years ago that Catherine McAuley, together with Mary Anne Doyle and Elizabeth Harley, took their vows as the first Sisters of Mercy, in George’s Hill in Dublin.

Catherine and her companions returned to Baggot St where she had set up her House of Mercy four years earlier.

From this day – Foundation Day – until her death, ten years later, Catherine travelled extensively, responding to the requests to send her Sisters to towns throughout Ireland.

She set up 12 convents in Ireland and two in England.

After her death the Sisters of Mercy followed in her footsteps continuing to set up schools and hospitals all over the world.

The CEIST Faith Development Team have added the following reflection to assist Mercy schools in celebrating the day.
