Presentation Ballingarry, celebrate 140 years in education

Presentation Secondary School, Ballingarry, Thurles, Co. Tipperary celebrated their 140th Anniversary in Ballingarry on November 21st.

A Mass was celebrated in the school attended by past, present, Principals, Deputies, Staff and Students.

Special Guests included Sr. Fidelis Purcell (Chairperson of Board of Management), Sr. Anne Nevin, Sr. Patricia Wall, Sr. Kathleen Barrett, Sr. Miriam, Sr. Sheila Fox represented the Presentation Sisters, and Ms. Margaret Farrell and Ms. Anne Kelleher represented CEIST.

Members of Parents Council and School Board of Management also attended.

Sr. Teresa Walsh arranged the choir and addressed the congregation, in a moving speech that outlined the Presentation Ethos and her desire that Presentation would continue into the future.

Sr. Anne and Sr. Kathleen presented the school with an original excerpt from a publication from 1871 detailing when the Convent was first built.

The school also discovered a Bible in their Archives that dates pre 1871 and have concluded that it was the original, used by the founding sisters.

The Mass was concelebrated by Fr. Joe Walsh (School chaplain) and Fr. Derry Quirke P.P. Ballingarry.

Ms. Angela Cahill (Principal) commended the local people for their commitment to education and Nano Nagle for her vision, determination and understanding of the value of education.

She expressed a hope that in another 140 years, future generations will again celebrate this great woman’s legacy and the foundations of Presentation, Ballingarry.
