Coláiste na Toirbhirte, Bandon Students Undertake Leadership in Faith School Training

The student leaders from Leaving Certificate class in Coláiste na Toirbhirte, Bandon, Co. Cork participated in ‘Leadership in a Faith School’ training recently with Catherine McCormack from CEIST.

The leaving cert girls (elected by their peers) are each responsible for a year group and mentor them during the year.

The training consisted of identifying the nature of leadership and the qualities of a good leader followed by the attributes of a leader in a faith context.

The identity of the faith school and the specific ways in which the leaders could provide leadership in this context was explored.

The girls own spirituality was viewed in terms of nurturing their faith in a community setting (for instance through school liturgies, etc) and also by developing spiritual practices for themselves such as meditation and reflection.

The girls then participated in a guided visualisation where they ‘met’ with Jesus and listened to his message for them.

They were also encouraged to set up a little ‘Sacred Space’ in their own homes where they could be reminded to pause and reflect.

Finally, the girls explored meaningful ways of guiding the students for whom they have responsibility.

They will hopefully encourage the other students to cherish their identity as Catholics and share with them the meaning and purpose that can be found in a faith as rich as ours.
