2018 Start Date for St Mary's Ballina School

A preview of the future of education will be available to all attending the upcoming enrolment night at St Mary's Secondary School, Ballina, Co. Mayo.

The Convent Hill based institute is all set to open its doors to prospective students on Thursday, January 19th.

Between 6pm and 8pm, new Principal, Robert O'Reilly, staff members and existing students will proudly share an insight into St Mary's incredible tradition of holistic, inclusive education and the exciting developments it has planned for the coming years that will firmly position it as one of the most cutting edge secondary schools in the country.

Key among these developments is the planned multimillion-euro purpose designed, state-of-the-art campus that has been approved for St Mary's and has now just entered the official planning stages with an application for permission to construct due to be submitted this spring.

"Assuming there are no hurdles we hope to go to tender next autumn with building commencing in early 2018 and concluding in around 12 months," Mr O'Reilly said in an interview with the Western People newspaper.

The new school will set the standard for school design and layout in Ireland and will complement and enhance the broad curriculum that St Mary's offers.

This includes a strong emphasis on STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) subjects and academic excellence with an equal commitment to extracurricular activities, pastoral care and the holistic development of students.

Mr O'Reilly revealed that the curriculum will be expanding, with plans under way to introduce a technical graphics class.

This will ultimately lead to a new Leaving Cert subject option - Design and Communication Graphics (DCG).

"We also hope to bring in a compulsory computer science class and to facilitate every student with access to Student Office 365 which provides them with a portfolio record of their work from first year on," he said.

Prospective students and their parents/guardians are welcome to visit St Mary's and meet the staff and students from 6pm on Thursday Jan 19th. Birth certificates and PPS numbers are required for enrolment.
