U16 ‘A’ All-Ireland Basketball League Champions

# from C to A-mazing!

Congratulations to the Presentation Secondary School, Waterford who were crowned All-Ireland U 16 ‘A’ Basketball champions in a thrilling game in the National Basketball Arena at the beginning of March.

Having narrowly lost out in the U16 ‘A’ Cup Final to Crescent Comprehensive by a single point two weeks earlier, the Pres girls were more than up for the game against a highly fancied Rathangan panel.

The game started brightly with both teams trading basket for basket. Excellent defence from Stephanie Coldrick and Brianna O’Regan ensured that both teams reached half time with only a single basket separating them.

At the beginning of the 3rd quarter Rathangan upped the tempo and, despite some excellent inside play from Stephanie Coldrick and Jordan Kervick, went into a 4 point lead with only 8 minutes to go.

A ‘ferocious’ team talk from coach Coady coupled with some excellent steals and finishes from Courtney Healy, Beth Carton and Annie Fanning saw the Pres girls turn a 4 point deficit into a 10 point lead.

With the final whistle approaching the 50 Pres supporters raised the roof of the NBA for one last time drowning out the 350 assembled Rathangan supporters.

As captains Beth Carton and Becky Roche collected the Cup from the President of Basketball Ireland, the players celebrated what was a truly a fantastic performance from an exceptional team.

The final icing on the cake was the MVP award being given to Presentation point guard Annie Fanning.

Days just don’t get much bigger or better than this!
