Agricultural Science Students Success

Congratulations to fifth year students Laura Quigley, Caroline Fogarty, Niamh Houlihan and Aoife Bergin who were announced as one of the five school finalists in the Certified Irish Angus Beef competition.

Their prize is very unique and consists of five Angus heifers. The girls were presented with the calves at the National Ploughing Championships by Minister of State at the Department of Education and Skills and Jobs Damien English TD. The calves will be reared to slaughter on Laura’s farm in Nenagh. The girls also will also receive a trip to Somerset to visit Blade Farm, which is one of the largest beef farming operations in England.

The girls are studying Agricultural Science for their Leaving Cert, so rearing the calves will provide the ideal opportunity to put the theory from class into practice. The girls are continuing with their project on Meat Quality and Marketing and will present their findings next year.

One school will be chosen as the overall winner and will receive an additional €2000. The competition was sponsored by the Irish Angus Producer Group along with its partners, ABP and Kepak. Congratulations to the girls and their teacher Ms O’ Brien.
